I thought we could use a threat to post questions and mysteries about the game in hopes someone knowlegable can educate us.
My first 2:
1. Does the Stat: Research do anything atm?
2. Does it matter if you place your weapons in the front of your ship ?
about 2: I know this is an odd question as the main factor would be reload time. I just wanted to speculate if there is even the tiniest advantage to have for example the laser cannon in the front targeting a room in the front section of the enemy ship because of the shorter flight path compared to having it in the rear section. Even if its just an advantage on the last hit or so....

1. Research pretty sure speeds up lab research
2. Not that I know of ask storm if I am wrong.

1.) last i checked the research was not improved by crew manning the room, i sadly don't have anymore research to test it on again. (someone asked me to test if it speeds up teleports, testing this will be kinda risky in the top 100 but ill try it out eventually)
2.) Lasers seem to fire/hit right away (like beam weaponry should) so their position has no effect. Missiles do have to travel and would hit targets sooner / later depending on their position on your ship and the enemy room targeted. But, the difference is probably negligible when compared to proper ship design and shooting at the appropriate room.
Note: the question for number 2 really is.. will the delay in hitting be so long a second missile would fire before the first hit? Will the game allow the missile launcher to fire a second missile without the first one impacting? If the game delays fire in anyway then you now have a very very good reason to position and fire missles for a shorter patch.. we should all test this out too.

The only reason why I haven't switched missile rooms to the front of the ship has to do with layout and AI programing considerations. Otherwise, all things being equal, armored ship for armored ship, I would probably put the missile launchers in the front for a slight edge in the mirror match.
It is only a small variable though, since crews at the missile launchers are another, and how armored the rooms are is yet another, there are so many reasons why but it could help just a little since the game is often won on milliseconds.

I have the feeling that missiles cheat when crossing between ships and that the time they fire to the time they hit is always the same no matter where you place them or your target is. it would be much easier to program missiles to hit 5 seconds (or whatever it is) after launch no matter what, vs programming actual distance and time characteristics.

You mean it's simply a cosmetic animation?

its doubtful its only cosmetic as you can physically scroll across the gap between ships with your finger so i would think it does make a very small difference only because of how slow the missiles move

it's true you can scroll across the gap and watch missiles fly between ships but you will always overtake and pass them when switching ships. this is when they cheat the time. you simply cannot keep the missile on your screen for its entire flight.
i believe that if the devs had time and distance program for missiles they would have higher level missiles traveling at faster speeds as well as different types of missiles traveling at different speeds.

switching between ships is much much faster than scrolling across the gap manually... also you can literally scroll and follow a missile from your ship to the enemy ship without changing perspective and watch it hit the enemy ship all without losing view of it so distance definitely would play a small role in it we are talking micro seconds here though. elevation has less of an impact as missiles travel in a straight line to the target.
there is a missile speed attribute when viewing missile info so i would think the eventually plan to vary it up with other different kinds of missiles.. i would be looking forward to a VERY slow moving nuclear warhead lololol i would name it the FATCAT or CATFACEBOMB
