The Eternal Battle between the "Haves" and the "Have nots."
It always rears its head.
So people are getting mad because the game seems "unfair."
Lets breakdown what fair and unfair is.
---------------PVP----------------
Online vs Offline
The attacker will ALWAYS have the edge vs someone who is defending. This is mostly due to limitations of the AI.
For example, if the defender has poor abilities with programming AI he or she will resort to trying to "break through" to hit the hull by destroying one room, the heavily armored shield perhaps.
Why is this?
As the basic AI scripts are written, targeting the shield is the easiest way to focus damage and break through a room to deal damage to the hull of the ship.
Consequently, in pvp matches vs lower ranking people who are new to the game, and therefore have less experience with the AI, the shield room remains the most heavily armored room on the ship. It is not uncommon to see this room well armored to heavily armored in upper tiers in the game, because this particular AI script remains very simple, but because it is very simple the shield room must always be protected.
Again, as a consequence, the MORE armor you stack on any given room, the LESS armor you have to apply to other rooms, like lasers, or missile launchers.
A good player, when attacking, should see this, and focus all their attacks on the room with the least life, and if possible the least armor.
Most of you know by now this room has a name, it's called the turret.
If the turret, too, is heavily armored, along with the Shield room, a good player turns his sights to the NEXT room worth hitting with everything he's got, the Mining Laser.
This room can mount more armor, but if the shield room and BOTH turrets are armored, there is unfortunately less armor for other rooms on the rest of the ship.
Any room that is unarmored is bad news, so long as it's not a bedroom/bridge/alliance room/storeroom/ and has health bars, those rooms should have armor.
Each room should be the "gray man" and not scream out to the online attacker "SHOOT ME SHOOT ME, VERY VULNERABLE TARGET HERE!"
Unfortunately for the defender, there is no way around this unless the developers give the defender an infinite amount of armor blocks, OR the player gets good with AI, armors all their rooms with 3 bars of life or less (reactors can soak up some hits so they are good, for the most part, without armor), and programs the AI to hit other rooms INSTEAD of the shield room to break through and deal immense damage to the enemy hull.
All things being equal, if all the rooms were equally as strong with 3 life bars, and were able to all mount equal amounts of armor, to me the choice comes down to firing at either a cannon or a shield room, and I choose a cannon. Faster rate of fire than the shield's ability to recharge, take it out and the other guy hitting your shield is at a disadvantage now.
I'll rant some more and edit this post later but this is the gist of the advantage of online vs offline.
