Backdrop:
At the start of T4, a new super ship appeared on the top 100 and quickly took first place. Jjjb appeared out of nowhere, we came to find out he was a P2W player who had purchased his ship and crew with an ungodly amount of money. Our own ships where no match for him, killing most of us with ease when he attacked with impunity and was able to defend using an AI script we had never encountered before.
The Game Changing Dread Ship:
Jjjb admittedly did not fit the mold of a typical P2W player. Most lacked the skill, experience, and AI to make use of their otherwise overpowered ships. Jjjb however was a serious exception, he was an expert player with a maxed out ship and crew. His sheer prowess might have been the catalyst to his alliances downfall when we were gathering alliances against Elder Drivers (see how we won T4).
Jibb was a force to be reckoned with, his appearance and strategy changed the course of the game. His ship had an AI that would single target a room. Up till now, no one had developed an AI that could do that, (mostly because few thought it was even possible.) However Jjjb was obviously doing it, and so the top alliances went to work trying to reverse engineer it for their own use. In the meantime anger was building in the community that no one could stop him.
The Breakthrough:
There was no way we could catch Jjjb trophy wise, but SQUID did want to show he wasn’t undefeatable. SQUID and DM had both reversed engineered the AI he was using and now had access to it. At SQUID we had a meeting with our top players including Me & Corsair to discuss how we could beat Jibb. His Trophy count was too high to attack him (game mechanics at the time) So our only hope of giving him that bloody nose was to beat him on the defense.
Hell Mary Defense Plan:
We hatched a plan using my ship, Jib had left his shield room poorly defended and bottle necked. He was relying on his ships sheer firepower and single targeting AI to destroy enemy ships before they could do any serious damage. After watching countless replays we realized he didn’t even supervise his own battles, rather, he just let his AI fight the full battle.. paid to heal.. and attack another ship. He was a machine, and we would use that to our advantage. We figured out the room targeted by his single target AI, and I armored that room on my own ship to the maximum. The hope was that it would buy my ship enough time to kill his. Using his reversed engineered targeting AI, we designed my ship and wrote an AI specifically to fight Jjjbs ship.
The Battle:
The AI was programed to teleport my boarding crew and hold his shield room. We then had my ship spam penetrator missiles into the room while my lasers single targeted his one engine. We had a strong understanding of game mechanics and knew that penetraters will do extra damage to destroyed room (the system damage and hull damage will both hit the hull) we also knew they would not harm my boarding party that was keeping the room from being repaired.
The AI was set.. the trap was laid.. we waited for confirmation from fellow SQUIDs that Jibb was actively attacking ships… I let my immunity expire. After about 6 mins I got the message I hoped for.. my ship defended vs Jjjb. We posted it everywhere.. it was our small victory in the face of a goliath , but it was well earned.
Aftermath:
Jjjb was like a star that burned to bright, as quickly as he was the top player and won T4, he become a typical P2W player which no real AI or design skills. We speculated for months what really happened. Finally after talking with a multilingual Chinese player he confirmed the story. Jjjb had spent thousands to make his ship a goliath but had grown tired of the game he had paid to win. he sold his account to some other Chinese player and had moved on to some other game. Jjjb for all the waves he caused was actually a very talented player. So much respect to the dread ship of PSS, may he find peace whereever he is.. probably terrorizing some other game community!
