Formation and Tribulation:
S.Q.U.I.D. WarFleet traces its origins back to a group of beta testers and backers who first planned its creation. One of those members, who we call Grandpa SQUID is NightLane. He was winner of the beta season individual tournament and is the oldest member of our family. They had gathered together in a Kik chatroom (3rd party app) and started to recruit promising players to make up the core of the future alliance.
When S.Q.U.I.D. had gather its key founders they went to work trying to finalize a name and pick a leader. Most believed the leader would be the member who had put the most work into the alliance and had the most experience with the game. But everyone was given a fair shot at the position who desired it. Speeches were made, and voting commenced. I personally had just been recruited.. only catching the last speech, and only seeing plans to vote on a survey site. I advised then that we should start a webpage for the alliance and post the speeches for all to read, I also advised we should vote openly. I however had little influence then and actually abstained from voting as I knew little of most of the candidates.
When the dust cleared, I came to find that Zulrus was elected leader, and that voting had resulted in more votes then there were current members of SQUID. This started a chain reaction in the alliance, members who had really put the effort into our creation were angry and disillusioned. Our alliance (and honestly the whole community) lost some players who probably would have went on to be famous and influential. But Zulrus had won and the resulting exodus left a power gap that needed to be filled.
A Foot in the door:
As time went on, I started to understand the situation our alliance was really in. I personally found Zulrus to be a good person, but he lacked the experience, dedication or maturity to be a leader. He would often make speeches about issues but not actually do anything to fix them. He was overly confident in his leadership abilities (giving out advise about how to be a leader to the rest of us.) So when Zulrus started to search for members to become officers in the alliance, I took the opportunity to gain more influence and I volunteered to be “head of personal.” I asked for this position because it honestly covers what a leader would actually do. I planned to help Zulrus run the alliance, supplementing him in areas I found to be lacking.
The Beginning of Alliances:
The developers released a beta test with the new Alliance feature.. and soon multiple alliances were created and recruiting! With some prodding from our members, Zul finally created our alliance in the beta and we started to recruit hard. By the time the beta was ready to make production, we had become the number 1 alliance. However this didn’t count for much, we needed to start SQUID in the real game and repeat our efforts.
When the update was released we were all ready to go to work.. However Zulrus was nowhere to be found. Dark Matter Hero’s was the first alliance to be created, and their recruiting efforts were equally amazing. After almost 48 hours Zul finally founded our alliance and we sat in only the top 20. As if being late to the party wasn't bad enough.. He named us "S.Q.U.I.D WarFleet" not the grammatically correct "S.Q.U.I.D. WarFleet" we had agreed to... but that's a story for another day.
A Steep Climb:
We knew we were in trouble, we were a brand new alliance and had little appeal to recruit with... But we started to recruit as best we could.. first posting on the old (now abandoned) forum as well as in the game itself. We advertised with anything we could think of.. we claimed we were the BETA’s number 1 alliance, and enlisted the help of some new members who did not have strong ships but were willing to advertise non-stop for us. We even carried out a few small mergers to help us grow. As month 2 of the game wore on we were able to climb our way to 2nd place right behind the Chinese alliance Elder Drivers. We changed our primary focus then from recruiting to training, we were still willing to bring in strong players but we tried to teach the players we had how to become champions... By month 3, we had gotten to first.. We held the title for 6 months before we retired.
